HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
Growing up, I loved to go fishing. At times, I wished there were eight days a week instead of seven.
I never forgot my first fishing trip. At the age of six, my grandfather took me to his pond around the corner from our house. I was so excited. The day before, he brought me a fishing pole, hooks, weights, and of course a small little red and white round plastic bobber. Then he explained to me how everything is used and why. When he got to the bobber, he explained to me that when the fish nibbles on the bait, the bobber would go underwater and I would grab the pole, reel it in, and catch the fish.
Wouldn’t you know it, as I left that morning to go fishing, my mother told me, “GOOD LUCK, I HOPE YOU GET A FISH” It wasn’t long before my little red and white plastic bobber went under the water. I yelled out to my grandpa that I got a fish. He shouted back and said, “Start reeling the fish in or you will lose it.” Well, needless to say, I lost the fish.
Over the next hour or so, my little red and white plastic bobber went under the water a few more times with the same results — no fish at the end of the line.
FINALLY! I caught my first fish. I was so excited.
Over many years to follow, I realized that this little red and white plastic bobber that I thought was God’s gift to fishermen was, in reality, a warning to fish because they could feel the resistance on the bait due to the pulling on the little red and white bobber as it went under the water. Feeling the resistance, the fish would let go of the bait before it could set the hook.
I said to myself, “There’s got to be a different way” when the fish can’t feel the resistance on the bait. After my expert calculation — BULL! Actually, I got lucky and invented Shore Catch, the first and only wetless bobber ever made.
So the next time my mother says to me, “GOOD LUCK, hope you get your fish,” I will tell her, who needs luck when you have Shore Catch?
